How to choose the right PC: gaming, office or professional

Buying a computer is not like buying a household appliance: there is no one model that suits everybody. A machine more powerful than you need is wasted money, while an underpowered one becomes frustrating within weeks. The trick is to work out what you will actually do with it and choose the components accordingly, balancing performance, budget and how long it will last.

In this article we look at the three broad uses — office, gaming and professional — with concrete advice on processor, RAM, storage and graphics card for each. For standard office use — web, email, Office, document handling — you do not need a powerful machine. A recent Intel Core i3/i5 or AMD Ryzen 3/5, with 8 GB of RAM and a 256-512 GB SSD, is more than enough. The SSD is the single most important upgrade over an old mechanical hard disk: it makes booting and opening programs instant.

If you work with many browser tabs open, or with accounting or management software, we suggest 16 GB of RAM. For the operating system, Windows 11 Pro in a business setting (for BitLocker and remote management) or Windows 11 Home for personal use. If the budget is tight, a refurbished PC with these specifications can cost up to 40% less than new.

For students and general home use, even a Chromebook or a laptop with an Intel N-series processor can be enough if all you do is browse, stream and follow lessons online. They start at €250-300, are extremely light and last all day on a charge.

Gaming is the most demanding use there is. To play recent titles at Full HD with high detail you need, as a minimum: an Intel Core i5 (13th generation or later) or AMD Ryzen 5 (7000 series), 16 GB of DDR5 RAM, an NVMe SSD of at least 1 TB (modern games take 50-100 GB each) and a dedicated graphics card such as an NVIDIA RTX 4060 or AMD RX 7600.

For 1440p or 4K gaming you need more powerful GPUs — RTX 4070/4080 or the newer RTX 5070 — and the budget rises considerably. The monitor matters just as much: a 27-inch 1440p panel at 144-165 Hz is the sweet spot for value in gaming. There is no point in a powerful GPU paired with a monitor that cannot keep up with it.

Desktop or laptop? For gaming, a desktop gives better performance for the money, better cooling and the option to upgrade components later. A gaming laptop costs 30-40% more for the same performance and is far less upgradeable. We only recommend a gaming laptop to people who genuinely need to carry it. Graphic designers, video editors and CAD/3D professionals have specific needs. For 4K video editing in Adobe Premiere or DaVinci Resolve you want at least 32 GB of RAM, a processor with plenty of cores (Intel i7/i9 or AMD Ryzen 7/9), a fast NVMe SSD for working footage and a GPU with a decent amount of VRAM (8 GB or more).

For CAD work (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit), NVIDIA RTX A-series professional cards (formerly Quadro) come with certified drivers that guarantee stability and compatibility. For photo retouching and 2D work in Photoshop and Illustrator, a good processor and 16-32 GB of RAM matter more than the GPU. In every case, a monitor with good colour coverage (100% sRGB, Adobe RGB for photography) is essential.

A desktop gives you better performance for the money, better cooling, room to upgrade, a larger separate screen and a proper keyboard and mouse. It is the right choice for a fixed office position or for gaming. The obvious drawback is that it does not move.

A laptop gives you portability, a built-in battery, a small footprint and everything in one device. It is ideal for people who work on the move, for students, and for anyone without room for a fixed setup. The drawbacks: lower performance for the money, a smaller screen, less scope to upgrade and limited battery life. A hybrid setup with a docking station lets you use the laptop as a desktop when you are at your desk.
