How to protect your smartphone screen: the complete guide

The screen is the most exposed and most vulnerable part of any smartphone. A drop from a few centimetres, an accidental knock or simply sharing a pocket with keys and coins is enough to leave you with ugly scratches or, worse, a shattered display. Screen repair is one of the jobs we are asked for most often in our workshops in Leonforte and Catenanuova, and the cost of a replacement is usually far higher than a good protector would have been.

Spending a few euros on a quality film or a tempered glass protector can genuinely save you hundreds in repairs. And it is not only about looks: a damaged display can affect touch sensitivity, make reading harder, and even cut your fingers if the glass chips.

Plastic films (PET or TPU) are the cheapest option. They give basic protection against surface scratches and are almost invisible. They do not, however, absorb impact, and they tend to yellow over time. They suit anyone who wants light protection without changing the feel of the touchscreen.

Tempered glass is today's standard. At 0.3-0.5 mm thick and 9H on the Mohs hardness scale, it absorbs the impact of a fall and sacrifices itself instead of the original display. In our shops in Leonforte we stock tempered glass from the leading brands, fitting included, with a perfect bubble-free finish.

There are also hydrogel films, a middle ground that follows the curved edges of edge-to-edge screens perfectly. They protect well against scratches and can self-heal minor surface marks. We particularly recommend them for Samsung Galaxy models with curved displays.

The choice comes down to three things: your phone model, how you use it and your budget. For recent iPhones with a Ceramic Shield display we recommend full-cover tempered glass with black edges, which blends into the design. For Samsung Galaxy phones with Dynamic AMOLED curved edges, hydrogel film is often the better choice because it follows the curve without lifting at the sides.

If you use your phone somewhere it meets dust, sand or tools, go for 9H tempered glass with an anti-scratch coating. If you are a professional who needs maximum visibility, there are anti-glare and anti-fingerprint versions that keep the screen clean and readable even in direct sunlight.

Screen protection on its own is not enough. A good case absorbs the impact of a fall and protects the corners and the rear camera. Cases with a lip at least 1 mm above the screen stop the display touching flat surfaces when you put the phone face down.

Beyond physical protection, a few habits extend the life of a display. Do not keep your phone in the same pocket as keys or coins. Clean the screen regularly with a microfibre cloth, never with harsh chemicals. When you put the phone down, always place it screen up.

If you notice even a small scratch on the film or the glass, replace it straight away: damaged protection loses most of its effectiveness.
